Mascara OBSESSION: Benefit They’re Real

You guys, I know it’s been WAY too long but I can’t wait a second longer before telling you about my latest mascara obsession!

Last month Benefit released a genius new product called They’re Real: a lengthening, thickening, long-wearing, super glossy, badass mascara.

And by badass, I mean BADASS.

This mascara makes my lashes thick and long without weighing them down and unfurling my curl (my number one complaint of mascaras, thanks to my Asian heritage). It’s also smudge-proof and water resistant, a huge benefit here in the humid weather of Kauai.

Benefit They’re Real Mascara is currently sold out on Benefitcosmetics.com but you can find it at Sephora.com for $22.

MAC Mascara X

As many of you with stick straight, stumpy lashes can attest, it’s a glorious day in the neighborhood when a girl finds the right mascara.

For me, it started with Shiseido Lasting Lift Mascara. For years I would use this as a base to keep my lashes curled and then I’d layer other mascara faves over it. My lashes looked beautiful and stayed curled all day.

The problem was getting the stuff off. Lasting Lift Mascara worked so well for me because it stayed put—even when I wanted to take it off. When I realized that the removal process was also removing my eyelashes, I opted for a waterproof mascara that was a little more forgiving (Cover Girl LashBlast!).

Makeup Bag contributor, Monica Leitner, recently found the mascara of her dreams and wanted to share it with you:

I am always on the hunt for the perfect mascara since I was cursed with extremely sparse, stick-straight lashes.

MAC Mascara X is my new FAVORITE! I cannot even put into words how much I love this mascara, but I’ll try: this mascara refuses to clump, builds volume and length like nothing I’ve ever tried and refuses to budge/flake on even the hottest days. I’ve been known to load on excessive amounts of mascara (We’re talking 5-8 coats, people!) – if you’ve ever tried this before, you know what kind of clumpy, spidery and thoroughly unattractive mess this usually makes. But this formula is different. It’s special. No matter how many coats I pile on (in quick succession, mind you) the formula refuses to clump, building volume and length but maintaining a sense of elasticity.

I’m actually able to achieve gorgeous thick long lashes using only mascara – a real first. I am in LOVE!

MAC Mascara X is available online at maccosmetics.com for $13.

COVERGIRL LashBlast Fusion

Fusion Lineup

I’ve professed my undying love for COVERGIRL LashBlast mascara on this website more times than I dare to count, so you can imagine how excited I am to share the newest addition to the LashBlast family: COVERGIRL LashBlast Fusion!

This super volumizing mascara thickens and extends each individual lash for high volume, length and perfect separation.

The same big brush with flexible bristles that I love so much in the original LashBlast is a bit overwhelming at first, but after you get used to it you’ll love how it makes application smooth and easy.

Available in the following shades:

  • Very Black
  • Black
  • Black Brown
  • Brown

COVERGIRL LashBlast Fusion is available nationwide beginning April 2010 for $8.99.

Bobbi Brown Extreme Party Mascara

ExtremePartyMascaraLook_FH09

This month, along with her Holiday 2009 Chrome Collection, Bobbi Brown introduces the new Extreme Party Mascara, a buildable mascara with tons of volume and zero clumping or flaking.

Now here’s the thing about me and mascaras: most of them don’t like me.

I’m sure it’s not intentional. I mean, I’m a nice enough girl and all, but my eye lashes can be difficult to deal with so it’s understandable that most mascaras aren’t into me.

As I’ve explained a kazillion times before, my Asian lashes don’t hold a curl unless I’m wearing waterproof mascara. This proves cumbersome as most waterproof formulas are not easy to remove. In fact, I’m either fogging up my contact lenses with oil-based removers or I’m scrubbing the crap out of my eyes and losing lashes along the way. Not to mention, waterproof formulas tend to look dull on the lashes, not shiny and rich like the non-waterproof kind. So, in the name of eye-opening lashes, I continue to reach for waterproof formulas day after day.

A few months ago, I found my holy grail mascara in Lancôme Hypnôse Drama and now (can you believe my good fortune?!) I’ve found a second mascara that I bow down before and kiss the countertop it sits on: Bobbi Brown Extreme Party Mascara.

ExtremePartyMascara

This mascara is totally layerable (is that a word?)—okay, buildable—in that you can add a fresh coat even after it dries thanks to the pliable formula. Just look how amazing my lashes are:

I wore this all day and night, I even slept in it (the things I do for the sake of this beauty blog!), and I didn’t have one flake or smudge. In fact, this morning my lashes looked good enough to face the day.

Bobbi Brown Extreme Party Mascara washes away clean with soap and water (and zero elbow grease). I’m pretty sure this mascara likes me.

The new Extreme Party Mascara is available online at BobbiBrown.com for $22.
