As I get older I’m fearful of causing an uproar on my sensitive face and instead choose to play it safe where my skincare is concerned. This means using the gentlest products with the least reactive ingredients and sticking to my tried and true regimen.
That is, unless someone I know and trust convinces me otherwise. In this case, it was Bree that insisted my life was not worth living until I tried the Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque.
Bree has flawless, amazing 21-year-old skin so I wasn’t sure I needed to believe her when she described how this mask made her skin feel after the first time she tried it. “Mom, I’m not even kidding. This is the best product I’ve put on my face EVER,” she told me the day after her first application.
Having sensitive skin that reacts in strange and unusual ways to pretty much anything I put on it makes me very leery of masks. Especially clay masks that tend to dry out my skin and leave it feeling tight and irritated. For the sake of keeping my face happy, I may have responded, “that’s nice, honey” and went about my routine without giving it a second thought.
As the weeks went on and Bree continued to sing the praises of this Kiehl’s mask, I could no longer ignore her raving recommendation without trying it for myself. I mean, she was saying things like “It tightens every pore and makes my skin feel so soft and smooth” and “I can’t believe we didn’t know about this sooner.”
So, in the name of beauty and all that it represents in our lives, we set forth and took one for the MakeupBag team:
Bree, Janey and I slathered that mask on and waited ten minutes to see what would happen (while taking selfies to occupy ourselves, naturally.)
I was immediately surprised that my skin didn’t sting as I had expected it to. And even as the mask started to dry, I didn’t feel like my skin was cracking or turning to brittle.
After ten minutes we followed the instructions to remove the mask (with a warm, wet washcloth) and my skin was left feeling smooth and supple and not the least bit dry and tight. I can’t quite testify that my pores have minimized but my face definitely feels and looks good.
Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque claims to purify with mineral-rich Amazonian White Clay and is best suited for normal to oily skin types. It is available online at Kiehls.com for $23
