Backstage Beauty: Funky, Chunky Haircolor

Funky, Chunky Hair Color

By: Megan McIntyre

Looks like it’s time to break out the Manic Panic. The big beauty trend for hair at Fashion Week was bright, chunky streaks of color that brought to mind punk-inspired street style circa 1996. At the Cynthia Rowley Fall 2010 fashion show, Eva Scrivo for Wella Professionals custom colored hair extensions in shades of emerald, lapis, amethyst, navy and turquoise to replicate the rich jewel tones present in the collection. Each hair extension was completely saturated with professional salon haircolor and then woven into the hair and styled, creating an element of surprise and intrigue when models hit the runway.

Super stylist Ted Gibson for beauty.com went for a version of the trend that was a little easier to DIY at the Vena Cava Fall 2010 fashion show (shown above). He used Streekers to color hair extensions in shades of hot pink, purple and green, then pulled them back into the models’ slightly mussed ponytails to give a “downtown, cool feel,” to the otherwise equestrian look.

We think this is one trend that just might hit the trifecta of translating in all three worlds: runway, red carpet and real world. This is the second season funky color has been featured at Fashion Week (the girls at the Spring 2010 Proenza Schouler fashion show rocked lovely lilac streaks) and Lady Gaga recently caused a stir at the Grammys with her own spin on the Crayola color trend. Adding a bright streak of color to your coif is an easy way to add a hip edge to your regularly scheduled hairstyle without a huge commitment. Now all you really have to decide is which happy hue you want to adorn your hair with.

Three Easy Ways to Deal With Pesky Gray Hairs

I guess I should be grateful that I wasn’t completely gray by the time I turned 30 like my mother and her mother before her, but I still get annoyed when I see gray hairs popping up around my hairline.

Thankfully I found a few easy ways to camouflage my gray situation and buy myself an extra week or two between colors without having to leave the house wearing a beanie every day.

1. Change Your Part

I know, it seems like total commons sense to change your part and hide those grays at the temple, right? I mean, only an idiot wouldn’t think to do this. RIGHT?

Sadly, I only figured this out in the last year or so. Even though one temple might be loaded with dozens of grays the other side might have not a one (like mine). Who knew?!

BONUS: Changing my part also gives my hair added volume.

To make myself feel better (and less idiotic) I’m adding this to the top of my list and we can all pretend this is huge beauty news.

2. Cover Grays With Your Mascara

A L’Oreal color specialist once told me to use a black Sharpie pen to cover my stray gray hairs. I thought this was a genius idea but when it came down to doing the dirty work, I could never quite hold the strand of gray and properly color it with a Sharpie. I’d either miss the whole strand or only get part of it.

Then I bought the Oscar Blandi Pronto Colore Root Touch-Up & Highlighting Pen, which has a brush-like applicator and works really well, but I lost it before long.

Since mascara is part of my daily routine, I know it’s always at hand and I can lightly coat the gray hair in no time at all. So far, this tip has worked best for me when I need some fast coverage.

3. Touch Up Roots in Ten Minutes with Color

If you have ten minutes to spare, my favorite way to get rid of grays is with Clairol Nice ‘n Easy Root Touch-Up (I use the medium brown shade). This formula is made especially for covering grays and it’s SO EASY!

This morning I applied this in less than 4 minutes, then sat at my computer and responded to emails for ten minutes before taking a shower. Even though it takes ten minutes to process, it’s really only application time that counts (I mean, I would have been at my computer anyway)—totally worth my time!

The Best Red Lips for Fall 2010

red lips

For the first time in THREE YEARS I am not in New York this season covering Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Instead I am in Kauai where I am helping my husband with a big project: a second restaurant opening soon near Poipu Beach.

Thankfully I have many beauty-blogging friends that are pounding the streets of New York, braving the weather (and traffic!) and scooping all the backstage beauty news for fall 2010.

My gorgeous friend Amber Katz from DailyMakeover.com scoped out the best red-lipped looks for the upcoming season. Here’s what she found:

Lipstick lovers always look forward to fall because it’s the season of the bold lip. If you’re not yet ready to plunge into the deep hues of the glampire beauty trend, there are many interpretations of the more classic crimson look. Oh, and stop making fun of your mother about her lip pencil: The formerly eschewed makeup implement is making a major comeback this fall. Get your sharpeners ready: Here are our favorite red lip looks of the season.

At Richard Chai, Gucci Westman for Revlon keyed makeup. Lips were defined with new-for-fall Revlon Suede Rhapsody Multi-Use Palette, set to launch in September 2010. First, Gucci applied ColorStay Lip Liner in Red all over the lip as a base, then painted on the deeper red lipstick from the palette which created a matte effect. “The clothes don’t have a lot of color, so I felt a pop of pigment was needed on the lips,” explains Westman.

China dolls were the beauty inspiration at Vivienne Tam, where makeup lead Charlotte Willer for Maybelline created a bright defined red lip look that was tempered by fresh skin and punctuated by a defined brow. To get such a precise defined lip look, Willer lined and filled lips in with Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liner in 50 Red, a gorgeous garnet. “It’s an Asian red, which echoes Vivienne’s collection,” Willer explained. The color and texture was perfect–no additional lipstick was used.

Another stunning, sculpted red lip took center stage at Herve Léger, as it’s known to do–this is no understudy red. Lisa Butler for MAC cosmetics created a strong, matte lip with MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger, a cult favorite orange-red. Gals with pink skin tones need not shy away from this warm red. Per Butler, “Simply toning down the pinkness in the cheeks with a bit of foundation and skipping blush will prepare even a cooler-complexioned girl for this type of yellow-based red.”
